Your assessment's design and how student responses collected may need to be altered for some Advanced scoring options. After reviewing Customizing Question Types (Rubric, Points, etc.) and Building Answer Sheets for a Manual Assessment, this lesson provides some best practices for those Advanced scoring features available to you and your assessment needs.
Where to Start
You can start by clicking Assessment > Create a New Assessment > Manual or open List Assessments to edit an existing assessment.
Visit the Setup > Questions tab to get started.
Advanced scoring is best to use when needing to accommodate scoring for the following:
- Particular Point Values for each answer choice
- Support of correctly calculating rubrics with decimals such as 0, .5, 1.5, etc. when entered (not scanned)
Select the Advanced (1) checkbox to trigger the Correct field. You will notice it changes and Points disappears. Points disappears because you are indicating how the score will be read with a particular value.
- Provide each possible answer choice with a point value prefaced with a ':'. For example, if A is worth 4 points, record A:4
- Follow with additional acceptable answer choices with a comma such as A:4, B:3
- For multiple answer choices, such as AB is worth 5 points record AB:5
- If AB is worth 5 but AD or C are both worth 4, you include them together as such: AD,C:4
You only need to indicate which answers are acceptable or correct. No need to include those that are incorrect. By default anything not listed will be considered a score of 0.
Change Multiple Answer Choices at One Time
You can change answer choices for multiple questions at one time.
1. Checkmark the questions to change.
Use the Update Selected Questions to enter your new choices.
2. To change the Question Label, checkmark Label. You have three options:
Put in Front: enter any alphanumeric character you want to show before the question number.
Start at: enter the question number you want to display as the first number of your check marked questions. For example, you may want questions 4-6 to be labeled W1, W2, W3 instead of W4, W5, W6.
Put After: enter any alphanumeric character you want to show after the question number.
3. To change the answer choices, checkmark Responses. To use alternate answer choices, checkmark Alternate. Enter your answer choices in the boxes (4).
5. Click Apply when you are finished. Repeat this process as many times as needed.
Change Individual Questions
1. Change Question Label. This is how the question number is displayed on the answer sheet. An extra credit/advanced question may be shown as 'Adv.' on the answer sheet.
2. If you don't want to use all 5 bubbles available for a question, leave extras blank so that the bubble appears empty on the answer sheet.
Note: 5 is the maximum number of bubbles allowed.
3. Feel free to change characters (e.g., to Y and N for Yes/No, T and F for True/False, numbers for rubric-based items, etc.). The characters you include here will appear on the answer sheet just as you type them. Note that only one character is allowed per bubble.
4. If you indicated a rubric-based question on the Questions tab, you will see numbers already inserted for that particular question.
Note: Any rubrics you opt to use and any non-ABCDE answers you opt to use must match your sheet design. In other words, if you designated an answer other than A-E, you must change your sheet design so that your answer is an option on the sheet. When entering values, note that the system is not case sensitive. When you save your work, all values will become capitalized.
