Math Equation Editor (MEE) Abstract for Item Bank

• When Creating an Item Bank Assessment,  Math Equation Response items will automatically include an MEE as an online tool. The included MEE is determined by the author.
• When creating Flexible Assessments, the MEE is available for Constructed Response questions types and can be enabled in Online Testing Tools.

There are twelve MEE options when adding the Math Equation Editor to an assessment administration:

• Numeric - Non-Negative Integers
• Numeric - Integers
• Numeric - Decimals
• Numeric - Fractions
• Grades 1-2: Includes digits, the four basic operators, the equal sign, and the decimal place.
• Grades 3-5: Adds the greater than and less than signs, fraction and mixed number buttons, x, long division notation, and exponents.
• Grades 6-7: Adds the multiplication dot operator, “greater than or equal to” and “less than or equal to” signs, the plus-minus sign, radicals, pi, parentheses, and absolute value.
• Grades 8-HS: Adds the percent sign, subscript notation, theta, the not-equal-to sign, the degree sign, square brackets, and sin/cos/tan. It also removes the dedicated mixed number button (mixed numbers can still be entered using the fraction button).
• Geometry: Provides a variety of notation commonly used in geometry, including symbols for angle, triangle, parallel, perpendicular, congruent and not congruent, similar and not similar, overline notation for writing the names of segments, rays, and lines, overarc notation, the six major trigonometry functions, and the prime and double prime symbols. 
• Advanced Algebra: Is similar to Grade 8-HS, but provides buttons for logarithms and the constants i and e.
• Statistics: Similar to Grade 8-HS, but provides buttons for mu, x bar and y bar, and upper and lower case sigma. Summation notation is not supported, however.
• Item Authoring: Editor is intended primarily for those who are writing items, although it can be used in student-facing contexts if desired. It excludes all characters that are available on standard keyboards, such as digits and the plus and equal signs, but otherwise provides access to all notation and symbols used on all of the other editors, plus a few additional symbols: the proportionality symbol, a square, infinity, the “therefore” symbol, and several different arrows. 

MEE Tool:

• The MEE tool can be added to Item Bank and Flexible assessments.
• Math Equation Response items will automatically include MEE as an online tool.
• MEEs are supported for the Math equation Response and Constructed Response item types.
• When enabled as an online tool, the toolbar will display a button to use the MEE. When selected, it will display a modal for the student.
• When the modal is launched, students can enter their answer using the modal or their numeric keyboard.

• The MEE will automatically be enabled for Math Equation Response items.
• The MEE can be enabled for Item Bank assessments with Constructed Response items in Item Settings.

• The MEE can be enabled for Flexible assessments in Online Testing - Tool Settings.

1. Students will select the space to enter the answer.
2. The Math Equation Editor modal selected during item creation will launch.
3. Students enter their answer by selecting options on the modal or input from their physical keyboard.
