This lesson provides in detail how to get camera ready for scanning with Lightning Grader. The following is geared towards assisting in making the best decisions on your current or needed technology for assessment scanning in your teachers' classrooms.
System Requirements
Grade with Camera works with the below browsers:
- Windows: Chrome and Firefox
- Mac: Chrome and Firefox
Some users may receive the following message: "Module Failed to Load: unable to initialize video"
To resolve this message, open another tab with Google Meet or another site that will access the camera on the computer. Then, attempt to launch LiG again.
Another option is to use an Incognito Window in Google Chrome.
We strongly recommend thoroughly testing every computer that will use Lightning Grader for grading assessments. Districts who have tested all of their hardware before grading have been successful implementing DnA and Lightning Grader for grading in their district. Since Lightning Grader is putting a video image in a web browser, the newer computers with faster processors, more memory, and new browsers will scan much faster than older computers with older browsers, slow processors, and limited memory.
You can test your camera here:https://test.webrtc.org/ If your camera passes the camera portion of this test it should work with Lightning Grader. We still recommend testing with Lightning Grader before bulk purchasing cameras.
Browser Recommendations
Currently, Lightning Grader recommends Google Chrome Version 61 and higher, Microsoft Edge 41 and higher, and Microsoft EdgeHTML 16 and higher. Please test any older browser versions before implementing Lightning Grader.
Web Cameras
All cameras marketed with the description "web cam" adhere to UVC standards and are viewable in Lightning Grader to date. Note that some low budget or older models have low quality (grainy, blurry, low light intolerant) images. Many newer (2013 or later) document cameras are UVC compliant and will work with Lightning Grader.
How Do I Know My Web Camera Will Work? |
---|
1. The litmus test is, "Can you Skype with it?" Any camera you can use to Skype can be used with Lightning Grader. |
2. The camera must connect to the computer via USB; VGA connectors do not work. |
3. Do not run your camera software at the same time you are running Lightning Grader. After choosing your camera, close the browser and reopen to allow Lightning Grader to recognize the change. See the "Lightning Grader Camera Grading Quick Tips" for further assistance with scanning. |
Please test or confirm that a specific camera will work before a bulk purchase.
Document Cameras
There are a variety of document camera that are compatible. In particular, Lightning Grader will work with any Elmo cameras that are UVC compliant such as the TT-12i and TT-12iD models. Older non-UVC compliant Elmo cameras will not work with Lightning Grader due to the proprietary software required.
Document Camera | Information |
---|---|
AverMedia |
Most newer Aver Document Cameras should work with updated drivers, as long as the camera has a USB connection.  Also, some models produce a backward image until you install their AVer+ software, click the following link for more information:  http://www.averusa.com/presentation/averplus-software.asp |
ELMO |
Newer models of ELMO document cameras have been confirmed to work such as the TT-12i, TT-12iD, and MO-1.  Elmo’s website says that the MX-1, TX-1, and LX-1 are UVC compliant, they should work but no users have yet confirmed this. All other Elmo models at this time are assumed NOT to work with Lightning Grader. |
Hovercam (Newer Models) |
Some older Hovercams produce an image that is too grainy to use for bubble sheet grading. |
HueHD |
No known issues |
iPevo |
Most iPevos are confirmed to work with Lightning Grader. |
Lumens Ladibug (All except the DC190) |
These cameras are reported to work as long as the driver is up to date and it is plugged in via USB. |
Mimeo |
These cameras usually come with software which runs in the background and will not share the camera with Lightning Grader. The Mimio software must be exited to allow it to work. To do this, look in your System Tray (bottom right side of your screen), find the Mimio Studio icon (may be hidden under an up-arrow you have to click), right-click it, and choose "Exit." |
Recordex Simplicity |
No known issues |
Samsung Digital Presenter Series |
No known issues |

Next Steps
Now that you have reviewed your technology and hardware, let's starting planning the implementation of Assessment Scanning with Lightning Grader!
