Description: This is an abstract for the Math Equation Editor or MEE, an online testing tool that can be enabled for students when taking an assessment online.
Purpose: Provides an explanation of how the MEE works, student view, and different variations of the tool.
Navigation:Assessments > View Assessments > 'Title of Assessment' > Administration > Online Testing > Test in Portal > Tool Settings > Math Equation Editor
Supported Assessment Types
When creating an Item Bank Assessment, Item Bank items that are Math Equation Response will automatically include the Math Equation Editor as an online tool.
When creating a Flexible Assessment, the Math Equation Editor can be enabled in Online Testing Tools and available for Constructed Response questions types only.
MEE Tool Review
There are three MEE options when adding the math equation editor to the assessment administration:
- 3-5, 6-8, and high school.
- Can be enabled for any assessment to be administered online, even if there are no Constructed Response type Item Bank items included.
- When enabled, the toolbar on the Students Constructed Response box will display a button to use the MEE.
- Once the MEE button is clicked, it should display a modal for the student.
- The modal will have a button to insert the equation into the item.
- The equation will be inserted as an image as the student's answer.
- MEE displays for both Item Bank and Flexible assessments.
- MEE will not appear on Explicit Constructed Response items, only Constructed Response and Constructed Response Advanced.
Grades 3-5
The Math Equation Editor for Grades 3-5 includes basic tools as appropriate for the grade levels.
For Item Bank item types such as Math Equation Response, the Math Equation Editor will automatically be enabled as it applies to the item. This means the MEE will not be available for students to use on all questions, but rather on questions where it applies.
For Flexible assessments, Constructed Response question types will add the MEE to the student's toolbar for the item. When selected, based on grade level, menu options will appear.
Student Portal View
- Students will select the Math Equation Editor icon to open and submit their answers.
- Using the editor, they will enter their answer.
- Based on grade level, additional equation menus may be selected.
- Students will select Save Equation to save answers.
Grades 6-8
The Math Equation Editor for Grades 6-8 includes tools such as:
- Basic
- Geometry
- Relations

- Groups
