Insights classifies customized anecdotal and discipline categories based on mappings to pre-set default categories. In order to add anecdotal disciplines to your metrics, the all customized categories must be mapped to the default categories.
Where to Start
Choose Admin Tools and Classify Data Points from the sidebar menu. The number of assigned and unassigned courses are displayed.
Click on the Unassigned number to view the discipline list. Anecdotal and discipline types can be classified directly on the screen or through the upload feature, which is covered in a separate article (see the bottom of this article).
The anecdotal and discipline types are displayed in alphabetical order. Unassigned codes are tagged in grey, assigned and classified in Insights are tagged ingreen. New classified codes will be tagged inyellowuntil the data extractor is run, at which point the tag will change to green and the courses will be displayed in the new department. Codes that are not to be used by Insights are unclassified and tagged inred.
District users will be able to choose the school; school level users will automatically see their school. The list can be filtered using the filter text box to enter a code or limited by Anecdotal Categories by using the Anecdotal Categories dropdown.
To classify a code, check the box to the left of the code. Then use the Anecdotal Categories dropdown to classify the code into one of the Insights default options. Codes can be classified in bulk by using the All/None/Invert buttons near the top of the page. Clicking all will check every code on the page (it does not check all unassigned codes), which can then be assigned to a subject using the anecdotal categories dropdown.
Choosing a code changes the dropdown from an anecdotal categories filter to an Assign Lookup dropdown. Choose the anecdotal category that best classifies the code. Click Undo Changes if needed.
An updated tag will be placed on the code.
Click Save Changes to save these changes.
District users will have the option to save to multiple schools by checking all that apply. Click Apply Changes to save.
The updated classifications will be displayed in yellow, indicating that the change is saved, but has not been applied to the data. The next data processing will apply these changes to the data, which will change these tags to green (for NYC schools, run the data extractor, for others, the data will refresh with the next data upload).
Anecdotal Categories can also be updated through an upload template. See the guide Classify Data Points by Upload - Course Subjects to learn more.
